Now that Kai has shed her own chip, her awakening seems even more interesting than Chief’s, as she is expressing traces of individuality and I think the show may even be hinting at a potential romance between her and Dr. Silver Team - I like this group of Spartans, and think they’re proving to be some of the more interesting characters.

But we only really got to see that in the opening action sequence of the series.

CORTANA HALO SERIES FULL

It’s about as game-accurate as you could manage in real life, and this just makes it additional frustrating when Chief isn’t wearing his armor or helmet half the time, because it actually looks really good when you assemble the full package together. Spartan Armor - While I have criticized aspects of the budget, I actually think that the show has done a great job with all the Spartan armor, including Master Chief’s own set. I’m also not opposed to the idea of making her appear human-size, rather than always being in the palm of Master Chief’s hand. But after some initial skepticism, I think she looks and sounds great. I’ve even come around to her appearance, which seems to be a blend of Halsey, Taylor and some original CGI.

Without question, it absolutely helps this series feel more like Halo every time Cortana speaks, given that it’s original Cortana voice actress Jen Taylor.

CORTANA HALO SERIES UPDATE

Update (4/16): I thought that it might be helpful to also list the things I do think are working in the show, so perhaps those could be amplified to help the overall series in the future, as I do think it does get a few different things right.Ĭortana - I was deeply skeptical about the Halo show’s version of Cortana, based on the short clip that was shown in the initial trailer for the series, but I am actually very satisfied with the final product. Hoping to see things turn around, but each week that feels less and less likely. There’s another half a season to come, but so far, I don’t think this is working very well for all the reasons I mention here. While I knew a Halo show wouldn’t be as action-intensive as the games, this is just getting boring. We had a whole scene this week with Kai talking about firing a Needler instead of…actually firing one. It also may explain why there has been roughly zero real action since the pilot, and we have barely seen the Covenant at all. The Budget – Whether it’s Chevy Tahoes with armor plating or scenes that look like Master Chief is driving a Warthog through someone’s backyard in Michigan, the budget here does not seem like what it needs to be. I get that Halsey and her assistant are on a trip, but still, obviously there would be mechanisms in place to indicate a Spartan has done something this drastic. Logic Gaps – You can find these everywhere, but this week was particularly galling when we see Spartan Kai cut out her own emotion pellet (again, in the nude), and her fellow Spartan somehow doesn’t notice the giant wound in her back, nor does this extraction trigger any alarms back at home base when everyone knew the second Chief was trying to take his out. We are building toward a “reveal” that Halsey did not kindly take in John when he was an orphaned boy and probably just straight up stole him and/or killed his parents herself but like, we know she’s shady. Halsey literally runs a program that takes child soldiers, turns off their emotions and makes them her personal killing machines.

Halsey – In terms of actual storytelling, I simply don’t find this “Master Chief has flashbacks to his childhood” storyline interesting.
